Troop 108 Scouts Having Fun At Camp

Troop leaders from both Camp Bob Hardin and Camp Old Indian report that their scouts are having lots of fun and adventures this week so far.

The Camp Old Indian scouts and scouters will drive to Camp Bob Hardin for tomorrow night’s dinner, Indian Pageant & OA Ceremony.

Remember to send mail soon as it is at least a two-journey to either camp.

Look for more updates later.

2011 Summer Camp Information

Troop 108 will be dividing up into two different groups for summer camp this year.  Our first-year scouts will be attending the fantastic Upward Bound program at Camp Bob Hardin.  This will really supercharge their journey toward First Class rank.  Our older scouts will get a change of scenery by attending Camp Old Indian in Travelers Rest, SC.  In reality, the two camps are only 30 miles apart.

Everyone will meet in the parking lot of Bi-Lo at the corner of Hwy 160 W. and Munn Road in Fort Mill at 10AM on Sunday, June 26th.  Scouts should come dressed in full uniform (we always travel in full uniform).  Scouts who don’t show up on time and we are not able to contact will be left for their parents to bring to camp.

Scout’s gear should remain in their vehicle while they check in with Miss Donna and Mr. Pat at our registration table.  Once their check in is complete, they will be instructed to which of the two enclosed trailers to take their gear for transport to camp.  It is very important that their gear be placed on the correct trailer so that it shows up at the correct camp.

We will be stopping at a fast food restaurant of some type on the way to camp for lunch.  Scouts should have money to purchase their lunch on the way to camp on their person when we leave Fort Mill.

Each scout should also bring a full case of bottled drinking water and place it on the flatbed trailer that will be parked beside the enclosed trailer that his gear was loaded onto.  This bottled water will be on ice in coolers and available for the boys throughout the week for hydration.

Some scouts (and leaders) may get a little homesick while at camp, so feel free to drop them some mail, but remember, it is probably a two-day journey from Fort Mill to our camps, so mail early using the appropriate address below.  Remember, nothing says “We Love You” like some mail from home (and a couple of crisp dollar bills to spend at the trading post!).  🙂

Lastly, a reminder about not taking electronics to camp.  Game systems, cell phones, MP3 players and such just serve to diminish your scout’s summer camp experience.  If a leader sees your scout with electronics, know in advance that they will be collected for return once we get back home.

Note that we  will expect to return to the Bi-Lo parking lot from our respective camps between noon and 2PM on Saturday, July 2nd.  As we have a better idea of exact arrival times upon leaving camp on Saturday morning, we will update this webpage remotely.   Make sure that your scout knows how to contact you via phone as we near Fort Mill so scouts and leaders can get unpacked and home as quickly as possible upon arrival in Fort Mill.

New Youth Leaders

Congratulations to Andrew W., our new Senior Patrol Leader, and to Jayci V. who was elected to be the new Asisstant Senior Patrol Leader  at the June 6th meeting.

Additionally,  Dylan H. will assume the Scribe duties, John M. will continue as Quartermaster and Britt H. Jr. will continue as Youth Webmaster.

These guys will do an outstanding job leading our troop.

2011 Pre-Camp Swim Test Information

Scouts should be at the Fort Mill YMCA at Baxter at 7PM on Monday, June 13th dressed to swim. Scouts should also bring a towel to dry off with and a completed guest pass (see link below).    Parents should not drop off their scouts as they will be released back to their parents immediately following the completion of their swim test.

We will also be having an additional swim test time at Leroy Springs Recreation Complex on Thursday, June 16th at 7pm. Scouts should come dressed to swim and also bring a towel to dry off with.    Parents should not drop off their scouts as they will be released back to their parents immediately following the completion of their swim test.

20110606-072804.jpgThe Eagle Patrol gives a program on the what should (and shouldn’t) go in a scout’s day pack for summer camp.

You’d be amazed at the items that scouts should carry with them around camp in order to “Be Prepared”.

The Boy Scout Handbook is a good source of this information as are the links below:

Election For ASPL To Be Held At June 6th Meeting

Any scout, First Class rank or higher, who is interested in running for Assistant Senior Patrol Leader of the troop should contact Scoutmaster Harllee prior to the June 6th meeting.  Scoutmaster Harllee reserves the right to deny a scout’s request to run if he feels that the scout isn’t yet ready to fill these big shoes or if the scout has areas in his personal behavior that need work first.

Remember that this is a year-long commitment – the first six months you serve as ASPL and while doing so learning how the SPL job should run.  Then after six months, you are promoted to SPL and a new ASPL is elected.

Patrol Leaders Council (PLC) meeting tonight @ 7pm

Only those scouts that are members of the Patrol Leader’s Council (that would be troop youth leaders and a representative from each patrol – i.e. Patrol Leader or his appointee) should attend tonight’s meeting.

Other scouts should prepare their uniforms for wear at tomorrow night’s Summer Court of Honor.

Five/Ten Mile Hike Opportunity on May 21st on the ASC Greenway

Drew Hunter has organized a hike for the troop as part of his recent participation in the SEALS (Scouts Excited About Leadership Skills) course.  The hike, which costs $3 (usage fee for the ASC Greenway) is organized in such a way that those boys who need just 5 miles for their Second Class rank can stop after 5 miles – if they wish.  Those that want or need to complete the entire 10 miles will continue the entire distance (hiking merit badge requires several 10 mile hikes and this is a great opportunity to knock one of those out).

Critical Information:

MP3 players and other electronics should be left at home.

Click here to download the PDF file containing the hike information, permission slip (which must be filled out and signed in order for your scout to participate) , ASC Greenway trails map and additional information about the ASC Greenway.
