Last Chance For Pre-Camp Swim Test

There will be on more chance to take the BSA swim test this weekend at the Baxter YMCA at 12 noon.

If you can not make it  to  Baxter on Saturday,  you can take the swim test at camp John J. Barndardt.   They have a very nice pool there.

Additional Summer Camp Info

Scouts are meeting in the Bi-Lo parking lot on Hwy 160 West at 10:30am on Sunday, June 27th.

Each scout should bring a case of water and and enough money to purchase lunch on the way to camp.

Parents are invited to visit camp on Wednesday evening. If you want to eat with the troop (nacho bar), please let the scoutmaster know as soon as possible.

The troop will return to the scout hut at around noon on July 3rd.

Refreshment Reminder

Don’t forget to bring a 2-liter drink and/or finger food (like chips, cookies or crackers) to the Court of Honor on Tuesday night.

We will enjoy these after the COH during fellowship time.

Troop 108 Summer Court of Honor on June 22nd

Because of difficulties in reserving a meeting place, the Troop 108 Court of Honor has been moved to June 22nd at 7pm at St. Johns United Methodist Church Family Life Center (across from the Fort Mill Fire Department on Tom Hall Street). This is the same location that we held our Court of Honor last December.

Parents should come in and be seated and scouts will wait in the lobby area.

Scouting families are encouraged to bring a finger food or 2-liter drink for refreshments following the event.

Wateree Camporee – May 21-23, 2010

The Wateree Camporee is coming up on May 21-23, 2010 at the ASC Greenway. Cost for the trip is $25.

Your scout should be making notes on information regarding this trip, so be sure to check his red pouch. If your scout’s permission slip didn’t make it home from last night’s meeting, a PDF of the permission slip is found below.

Keep in mind that your son’s NEW updated annual physical should be turned in prior to this outing.  Failure to do so may preclude him from attending.

Medical Form Reminder

As of January 1st of this year the Boy Scouts of America has adopted a new medical form that is to be used by all scouts and scouters. This new medical form is good for one calendar year from the time of the physical.

Any physicals that used the old form have been discarded from the troop’s records and the new form (link to a PDF file of the new form below) must be used when obtaining a new physical. Parts A, B and C of the new form must be completed.

Unlike in years past, scouts can no longer attach another medical form – like for school sports – to the BSA form.

(link removed because a newer form is now available)

We would like to have these new forms turned in to either Mrs. Donna or Mrs. Nancy before May 17th of this year. Scouts who don’t have a current physical form on file using the new BSA form may not be allowed to participate in events outside of troop meetings.

Please contact Mrs. Donna or Mrs. Nancy at an upcoming meeting if you have questions or if having this form completed by May 17th will be an issue.

Eagle Candidate Still Needs Your Help On May 2nd

Brent Lowney will be working on the second half of his Eagle Scout project on Sunday, May 2nd, 2010 at 1pm.

Brent’s project consists of building and placing six benches around the Anne Springs Close Greenway for visitors to enjoy. Three benches were already placed into position at the April 18th, 2010 workday.

Those interested in helping should show up at the Bruce Rush Pavillion near the nature center dressed in work clothes at 1pm (an hour earlier than last time). Please bring gloves to protect your hands. Drinks and snacks will be provided.

This is an excellent opportunity to help an Eagle Scout candidate out with his project and earn some service hours toward your own next rank advancement.

Geocaching Merit Badge Requirements Released

You won’t need your GPS unit to find the Geocaching merit badge requirements. We’ve got them right here.

The merit badge pamphlet is not yet available, but the Boy Scouts of America wanted to get the official requirements in the hands of Scouts and Scouters as soon as possible. The BSA knows that troops, districts, and councils will be planning spring and summer activities around this newest merit badge.

Here are a few highlights of what Scouts will learn while earning Geocaching merit badge:

  • Precautions necessary to have a safe time while searching for geocaches
  • Geocaching etiquette and how the principles of Leave No Trace apply
  • Geocaching terms
  • How GPS technology works
  • Steps for finding and logging a cache
  • How to use geocaching.com, the official online home of geocaching

But it isn’t all “classroom work.” The majority of the merit badge involves Scouts searching for geocaches. They’ll also have the opportunity to create and hide their own caches.

ASM Helms and others will be teaching this class soon for those Troop 108 scouts who are interested.
