Troop 108 Featured in Adventure Base 100/Scout Expo Coverage

Troop 108 was prominently featured in coverage of the recent visit of Adventure Base 100 and the joint Mecklenburg/Palmetto Scout Expo held at Carowinds. Not only were we shown and mentioned by name in CN2’s coverage, But two of our scouts were featured on the front page of the Fort Mill Times newspaper this week.

In a week when Boy Scouting has been dragged through the mud, it is refeshing to see the positive side of scouting so well represented by some of our own.

Last Day for Adventure Base 100 @ Carowinds

Today is your last chance to experience the BSA Adventure Base 100 exhibit at Carowinds. It is FREE and is a lot of fun for everyone….not just scouts!

Scout Show @ Carowinds

Scouts interested in helping out at the troop’s booth at the Scout Show at Carowinds should report to the area near the park side of the pedestrian bridge at the front gate at 9:30am on April 10th.

Adventure Base 100 – Don’t Miss It!

Adventure Base 100 will be at Carowinds on April 9th through April 11th in conjunction with the combined Mecklenburg and Palmetto Council Scout Shows. The event is outside the actual park, so you don’t have to pay to get into Carowinds to enjoy Adventure Base 100. You may have to pay to park in Carowind’s parking lots however.

You really don’t want to miss it!

Earthday Overnighter April 17th-18th

The Earthday overnighter is coming up on April 17th at the ASC Greenway. The cost is $10 and will cover Saturday lunch and supper and Sunday breakfast.

Permission slips were distributed at the March 28th meeting and should be filled out and returned with payment at the April 12th troop meeting. If additional permission slips are needed, you can download them using the link below.

Scouts will leave the Scout Hut at 8am on Saturday to head out to the greenway.  During the Earthday celebration our scouts will allow the public to use the troop’s canoes to paddle around Lake Crandal. When Earthday is complete, the scouts will be able to fish, canoe and do other fun stuff. Parents can pick up their scouts at the Dairy Barn on Sunday at 11am on Sunday.

Note – Dont forget that Brent Lowney’s Eagle Project is that Sunday at the ASC Greenway (see posting below).

Venture Work Day @ The Wrights

The High Adventure Patrol asked the Venture Patrol to help out on a Service Project at the Wrights on April 2nd. We will be working from roughly 8-12 Friday Morning and need additional help. We will meet at 8 AM at the entrance to the two Springfield Schools and then go over to Brenda’s house, about a mile and a half away. If parents can get the Scouts there, we will get them home.

New “Express Eagle” Rank Coming

Today it was announced the creation of a new “Express Eagle” rank.  This method of making it to Eagle Scout will be a big plus for those boys who don’t enjoy the many camping and other opportunities offered by the Boy Scouts, but still want to be able to list “Eagle Scout” on their college applications and resumes.

The “Express Eagle” rank can be earned with a donation of $100 per merit badge needed ($200 for Eagle required badges).  So, for just over $3000, any boy that meets the age requirements for becoming a Boy Scout can “earn” the badges needed to make Eagle in short order.

Additionally, with the “Hybrid Eagle” program, current Boy Scouts who are nearing their 18th birthday and can see no other way to earn the badges needed for Eagle can purchase only those badges needed  at the prices listed above.

Additionally, Eagle Scout service projects can be purchased at a cost of $500 each with the proceeds going to a charity in the Eagle candidates home town.

Complete details for the program as well as an Express Eagle Application can be found here.

Updated Medical Forms Due By May 17th

As of January 1st of this year the Boy Scouts of America has adopted a new medical form that is to be used by all scouts and scouters.  This new medical form is good for one calendar year from the time of the physical.

Any physicals that used the old form have been discarded from the troop’s records and the new form (link to a PDF file of the new form below) must be used when obtaining a new physical.  Parts A, B and C of the new form must be completed.

Unlike in years past, scouts can no longer attach another medical form – like for school sports – to the BSA form.

Click here to download a copy of the 2010 BSA physical form
(link removed because a newer form is now available)

We would like to have these new forms turned in to either Mrs. Donna or Mrs. Nancy before May 17th of this year.  Scouts who don’t have a current physical form on file using the new BSA form may not be allowed to participate in events outside of troop meetings.

Please contact Mrs. Donna or Mrs. Nancy at an upcoming meeting if you have questions or if having this form completed by May 17th will be an issue.

Eagle Scout Project Needs Volunteers

Brent Lowney will be working on his Eagle Scout project on Sunday, April 18th, 2010 at 2pm. This will be after the Earth Day campout.

Brent’s project consists of building and placing six benches around the Anne Springs Close Greenway for visitors to enjoy.

Those interested in helping should show up at the Bruce Rush Pavillion near the nature center dressed in work clothes at 2pm. Please bring gloves to protect your hands. Drinks and snacks will be provided.

This is an excellent opportunity to help an Eagle Scout candidate out with his project and earn some service hours toward your own next rank advancement.
