An election team from Skyuka Lodge, 270, Order of the Arrow will be at our May 8th meeting to conduct an election for our eligible youth members. The Order of the Arrow (OA) is Scouting’s National Honor Society. The fourfold purpose of the OA is:
To recognize those campers – Scouts and Scouters – who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives, and by such recognition cause other campers to conduct themselves in such manner as to warrant recognition.
To develop and maintain camping traditions and spirit.
To promote Scout camping, which reaches its greatest effectiveness as a part of the unit’s camping program, both year-round and in the summer camp, as directed by the camping committee of the council.
To crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others.
In order to hold an election we must have at least 50% of our registered members present. You may vote for all of the eligible boys, some of the elegible boys or none of the eligible boys – depending upon who you think is most deserving. To be elected, boys must receive 1 vote more than 50% of the total boys in attendance.
The Order of the Arrow membership requirements are:
Be a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America.
After registration with a troop or team, have experienced 15 days and nights of Boy Scout camping during the two-year period prior to the election. The 15 days and nights must include one, but no more than one, long-term camp consisting of six consecutive days and five nights of resident camping, approved and under the auspices and standards of the Boy Scouts of America. The balance of the camping must be overnight, weekend, or other short-term camps.
Youth must be under the age of 21, hold the BSA First Class rank or higher, and following approval by the Scoutmaster or Varsity team Coach, be elected by the youth members of their troop or team.
Adults (age 21 or older) who are registered in the BSA and meet the camping requirements may be selected following nomination to the lodge adult selection committee. Adult selection is based on their ability to perform the necessary functions to help the Order fulfill its purpose, and is not for recognition of service, including current or prior positions. Selected adults must be an asset to the Order because of demonstrated abilities, and must provide a positive example for the growth and development of the youth members of the lodge.
Jeremy P., a Life Scout at Troop 108, will be working on his Eagle ScoutProject on Saturday, May 12th. He will be restoring picnic tables and moving them to a picnic grove. He needs volunteers to help complete his project. Both scouts and leaders are welcome to come out and help. Scouts who volunteer will earn service hours needed to achieve their next rank.
Parents will drop-off their scouts at Jeremy’s house at 1:00pm, and pick-up will be at 5:00pm. . Water and snacks will be provided. Wear work clothes and closed-toe shoes, and bring safety glasses if you have them. Let Jeremy know you are planning to help by contacting him at 803-487-7778 or jernpetzel@comporium.net. He will give you his home address when you contact him about helping out
Each Earthday Troop 108 makes their canoes available to the public to use to paddle around the lake near the Dairy Barn at the ASC Greenway. This year is no exeption. If you’re planing on attending the Earthday event at the ASC Greenway, be sure to print, sign and return this signed permission slip to Mr. Bisel as soon as possible.
The troop will camp at the ASC Greenway from 8am on Saturday, March 30th until 10:30am on Sunday, April 1st, 2012. Cost is $10. Scouts should be dropped off and picked up at the Bruce Rush Pavillion at the times listed above.
To get to the Bruce Rush Pavillion, enter from the Hwy 21 entrance opposite Coltharp Road. If you’re stopped by the “Greenway Greeter” and asked for your fee, just let them know that you’re camping with Troop 108 and they will let you pass.
All scouts must provide a signed permission slip (found below in PDF Format) when they arrive.
If you’re planning to attend the Skyuka Lodge Games fellowship this coming weekend, make sure that you get registered ASAP as the registration link on the lodge website will be coming down on Thursday morning. If you don’t register, you can’t attend.
Once you’re registered, meet at the Bi-Lo parking lot prepared to leave at 4:30pm on Friday afternoon. Don’t forget to bring you something to cook on the grill after we arrive (unless you elected to have the lodge provide a steak for you for an additional $7). We will have the OA Health Form notebook with us (on the seat of the gator being pulled behind Mr. Harllee’s truck) so you don’t have to worry about bringing a physical form.
Mrs. Donna will be leading a group of Troop 108 scouts and leaders on a backpacking trip to Crowders Mountain on March 17 & 18, 2012. Scouts should bring their backpacks to the March 12th meeting packed as if they were leaving out on the trail that night. Our expertly trained crew of scouts and leaders who have hiked at scout’s Philmont high adventure reservation will go through the backpack with the scout and help them determine what should stay and what should come with them.
The permission slip for this event, found below, has additional details and should be returned at the March 12th troop meeting. Cost is $5.00.
