This event has multiple activities for the scouts to participate in, and one of those involves teaming up with other scouts to build a cardboard boat – which they will race against other troops.  ASM Bob Thomas has been tapped as Admiral of the Troop 108 cardboard boat fleet and scouts or parents with questions or in need of information should contact him at the email address shown below.

Additionally, about eight of our scouts will be headed to Westminster Park with some adult leaders on Saturday to demonstrate various scouting skills (tent pitching, fire building, knot tying and such) as part of an event with the Moving York County Forward group.  These scouts should know who they are (they are all OA members) and will need for their parent/guardian to write the following on the bottom of the permission slip – “I agree to allow my scout to participate in the scout skills event at Westminster Park on May 11th, 2013” and then sign below that handwritten line.  Scouts should return to the Wateree Event by 4pm on Saturday.

Summer Camp Information and Payment Info

Logo

Troop 108 is going to our home camp, Camp Bob Hardin, for summer camp this year.  Our dates are from June 30th until July 6th, 2013.  Scouts need to sign up for classes at the Camp Bob Hardin website (www.campbobhardin.com) by clicking on the “MB REGISTRATION” tab and then selecting “WEEK 3”, which is the week we’re going.  You’ll then be presented with a form you can use to register your scout for his merit badges.  Here are some important things to keep in mind as you register:

  • New scouts MUST attend the Upward Bound program.  It will give them a fantastic head start toward knocking out the first three or so ranks.  They will also be able to select an additional merit badge or two.  First Aid is a good Eagle required badge to get at summer camp.
  • You may CLICK HERE to see a grid of which classes are being offered when at camp.  This visual aid is a big help in understanding the schedule and in picking your scout’s classes.
  • Note on the grid that some classes span more than one class period during the day.
  • On the grid, Yellow equals a normal merit badge class, green means a merit badge class with additional fees and gray means an Eagle required merit badge class
  • We will collect the fees for the “green” classes from the boys separate from the actual camp fee of $240.00.

We have had some issues with fees being paid with checks that come back to us for insufficient funds – which costs the troop money in addition to the loss of the  face value of the bad check.  For that reason, you may elect to pay your scout’s summer camp registration fees in cash at a troop meeting or via the two Paypal links below.  There are two Paypal payment options below, one which will allow you to pay 1/2 of your scout’s summer camp fees in two separate payments and one that will allow you to pay the full amount.  Note that we add the fee that Paypal charges us to the total amount to make sure that we end up with the correct amount of money.

There will be a meeting for troop adult leaders and committee members on April 16th, 2013 to discuss transportation and other items related to summer camp.  Parents need not attend this meeting as we will have a summer camp meeting for parents at a later time.

List Of Partial Merit Badges From Merit Badge Expo

Below is a link to a PDF file showing the merit badges that our scouts worked on but did not complete. The list is comprised of the requirements that the Scout had completed by the end of the Merit Badge Expo. Information on the requirements remaining can be found at www.scouting.org and type the name of the Merit Badge in the “Search” field. Please read the requirement information carefully.

Please understand that while Troop 108 Leaders are always willing to help in any way they can, Merit Badge requirements have to be approved by a Merit Badge Counselor who is registered and approved by the Palmetto Council of BSA. We can assist the Scouts with this process, but ask for patience as it can take time. (This is why it is critical to make every effort to complete all prerequisites listed prior to the class if at all possible.)

The staff of Merit Badge Expo processed 246 Scouts form four states through 825 Merit Badge courses over the weekend. As hard as we try, there will be mistakes. If you think there may be a mistake on any of the Merit Badges, please Start by sending an email to the Committee Chair or Webmaster b y using the “Contact Us” link at the Troop website, www.fmtroop108.com. Leaders at the Troop meetings do not have this information and we cannot always access the needed files from Unity Presbyterian Church due to connectivity issues.

Please take time to Thank a Leader. These men and women spend countless hours of their time in training and preparation to make our son’s experience in Scouting the best it can be. We had 15 Leaders give up three days from their families, sleep in a tent when it was below freezing and work tirelessly to provide the best possible Merit Badge Expo possible. Twelve of the Leaders actually served on the Expo Staff and the ones who were not on staff took an opportunity to be Red Cross Certified in CPR and First Aid after they ensured all of our Scouts had reached their destination.

Remember, partial merit badges are good until the scout reaches 18 years of age, so once earned, they can always go back and complete them later, up to their 18th birthday.  However, it seems to be best if they work to complete them as quickly as possible so they can move on to other merit badge opportunities and adventures.

Merit Badge Expo Was A “Success” For Troop 108 Scouts

MB Expo 2013 Patch - 01282013

What an Awesome weekend at Merit Badge Expo. The weather was a bit cold at the start of each morning, but the Scouts and Scouters made it through the night and ended up participating in one of the most productive activities in the Scouting year.

Of the 246 registered scouts from four states that sat in class for a total of 825 Merit Badges, Troop 108’s scouts were 41 of those, sitting for 152 Merit Badges! 73 of which have already been completed!

There were several options for the scouts to choose from this year including the brand new Search and Rescue merit badge.  Those scouts who completed the Astronomy Merit Badge were also surprised to learn from our District Executive, Art Harris, that they will have the opportunity to have their Merit Badge presented to them by United States Air Force Brigadier General Charles Duke –  who also happens to be an Apollo 16 Astronaut and one of only twelve people to have walked on the surface of the moon!

So let’s see….  An Astronaut that has been to the Moon presenting a merit badge AND the brand new Search and Rescue Merit Badge!  What could possibly be better? How about Sixty One (61) BSA Eagle Required Merit Badges either started or completed for Troop 108 scouts?  These are small steps that will not only change these young men forever, but quite possibly mankind itself.

Additionally, Troop 108 played host to two visiting scouts from the Atlanta area as well as a local scout whose troop was not camping at the event.  The spirit of scouting was burning brightly at this year’s event.

Congratulations also to those who participated in ASM Bob Ludolph’s class on Flag Retirement Ceremonies.  This included two classes where the proper way to conduct the ceremonies were taught and  flags were prepared for retirement as well as a moving campfire on Saturday night where over 50 flags were retired from service with dignity and honor.

Flag retirement ceremony

Many, many thanks to ASM Britt Helms, event chairman, and the best staff that the Merit Badge Expo has ever seen (15+ from our very own Troop 108) for their tireless efforts and dedication to the youth of Troop 108 and the Scouts and Scouters of the York District.
