Last Meeting on 01-14 for the Troop Ski Trip on Jan 25-27, 2019

ASM David Harllee on a recent downhill run

Those participating in our troop snow skiing trip will have a last meeting on 1/14/19 as part of the regular troop meeting to hammer out last minute details for our annual ski trip.

We do have a few spots open for the trip.

The trip is scheduled to leave at 5pm on  1/25/19 and return on 1/27/19. The trip cost is $150. This price includes ski rentals and a two-night hotel stay. Some food is also included in this price: Saturday breakfast,
Saturday lunch, Saturday supper and Sunday breakfast. The only meal that isn’t included is supper on the trip up on Friday. Of course spending money is not included, so bring your own based on your spending needs.

To go on this trip you must be at least first class rank. If you are interested in going on this trip please come to the next troop meeting on 01/14/2019 with your money and bring your parents to sign the necessary forms. For those who have already paid for ski trip but cannot go, there will be a summer activity planned and your money can be moved to that trip if you wish. White water rafting is currently being considered.

Please contact David Harllee (803-242-0468 ) if you plan on going but cannot attend the 1/14/19 meeting.

Happy New Year & Meeting Place Update

Wishing all of the past and current scouting families of Troop 108 a happy, healthy 2019!

=======================

Meeting Place Update

We are happy to announce that we will continue to meet at Unity Presbyterian Church, but in a different part of the church complex. Our next meeting is on January 7th, 2018.

We will now be meeting in the youth wing at the back of the church. Scouts and leaders are asked to park in our usual spots and take the stairs near the entrance to the fellowship hall down and around to the youth wing entrance. We want to leave the rear parking area open for troop activities and games.

Park and drop off in the regular parking lot and take the yellow path to the rear of the building and the youth wing entrance (red arrow).

This will be our new meeting place for the foreseeable future. We may occasionally have to hold a meeting elsewhere if another group needs to use the youth wing on a Monday night.

Many Thanks to Unity Presbyterian family for continuing to accommodate the troop’s needs during the rebuilding process.

Merry Christmas Scouts!

We won’t meet as a troop again until January 7th, 2019 at a “yet-to-be-determined” location.

Also….

Don’t forget that we will be offering Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST) for all scouts in need of a leadership position within the troop (1st Class rank and above) on January 5th at the Catawba Masonic Lodge (directly across the street from Unity Presbyterian) on Saturday, January 5th, 2019.  See Troopmaster for details.

This course is designed to improve the leadership skill of all youth leaders in the Troop. It is also a prerequisite for SEALs and NYLT, which are additional training courses available to youth leaders.

Shrine Bowl Drop-off/Pick-up Site Changed

Because of the recent events at Unity Presbyterian Church we are changing the drop-off/pick-up site for the Shrine Bowl to the US Post Office parking lot directly across the street.

Those attending should still arrive by 7am and bring money to purchase breakfast at the Peach Blossom on the way to the game and supper at the Beacon after the game.  Lunch will be provided by the Shriners in appreciation of our help.  We are typically back in Fort Mill around 7pm and the scouts will call when we are about 30 minutes away.

The current forecast includes a chance of rain with temps in the mid to high 30’s to start the day and getting up the low to mid 50’s by mid-day, so dress accordingly.

Unity Presbyterian Fire & Relocation of Next Week’s Court of Honor

Five-alarm fire engulfs Unity Hall just before the roof collapses on 12-09-2018

Many of you are probably already aware that a 5-alarm fire swept through the Unity Hall building on the campus of Unity Presbyterian Church late on Sunday evening.  Through the collective efforts of many, many departments and volunteers over several hours, the historic sanctuary, new sanctuary and family life building were spared major fire damage.

We are blessed that almost all of the troop’s equipment was safely stored away in the troop trailer outside.  Much of what the troop lost was of historical value only and couldn’t be replaced. We are unsure what this means for a meeting place for the troop at this time, but rest assured that plans are being made to figure this out.

In the mean time, our Court of Honor was already postponed from tonight until next Monday night, the 17th, at the church’s request because of concerns related to the anticipated bad weather from this weekend.

The Court of Honor will continue as planned on the 17th.  St. John’s United Methodist Church, directly across the screen from the Fire Department on Tom Hall Street, has graciously opened their facility to us to use for our event.  We will start on the 17th with a parent’s meeting at 6:30pm, which will be followed by the Court of Honor and we will conclude with a time of fellowship and snacks.

Many thanks to St. Johns UMC and to Tevis Vandergriff, York District Trainer and Chartered Organization Representative for Troop 130, which is chartered to St. Johns, for making this possible.

Troop Court of Honor Postponed Until December 17th

Troop 108’s Equipment Trailer During A Previous Snowfall.

In anticipation of the snowy weather that is forecast for the Fort Mill area for this weekend, we are postponing the scheduled court of honor by one week to December 17th, 2018.

We hope that you all will stay safe and help others during the wintery weather.

ILST Training Available on January 5th, 2019

ILST training is scheduled in Unity Hall for Saturday, January 5 from 9am to 2pm and includes lunch.  Cost is $5 to cover lunch and the “Trained” patch that is presented to those that complete the training.

This is a great opportunity for those who need to serve in a position of responsibility for advancement (First Class or above) or would like to be eligible to be selected to attend future SEALS (Scouts Excited About Leadership Skills) or NYLT (National Youth Leadership Training) courses.

Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (“ILST”) is a troop-level training program led by the Scoutmaster and the Senior Patrol Leader.  It is designed to improve the leadership skill of all youth leaders in the Troop. It is also a prerequisite for SEALs and NYLT, which are additional training courses available to youth leaders.

Angel Tree Opportunity

The past few years Troop 108 has sponsored a bicycle and helmet for a young boy or girl from the Unity Presbyterian Church Angel Tree.  This year we have again enthusiastically agreed to sponsor a bike and helmet for a deserving child.

If you would like to participate, please bring any donation to the next couple of meetings and see ASM Carter or Mr. Weller, our troop treasurer, to accept your kind donation.  We will be able take donations through the end of the troop’s winter Court of Honor event on December 10th.
