Rechartering Time To Continue Scouting Fun in 2019

It is that time of year again.  Time to make the annual payment to remain a chartered member of the Boy Scouts of America.

There have been some changes to the troop rechartering process this year.  As you may have heard, the national fee and insurance costs have increased again this year.  These are fees that the troop collects and then forwards on to the council and national BSA offices.  In addition to those fees, the troop annual fee has been $20 which covers troop equipment purchase and maintenance, awards and badges, and other expenses that the troop may have throughout the year.

This year the troop adult leaders have decided to decrease our portion of the recharter fee to only $15 to help keep scouting affordable for our scouts.  Essentially the “all-in” rechartering fee for 2019 will remain as $60 total (plus a $2.10 paypal fee, if paid online).

Troop 108’s recharter deadline (essentially the deadline for getting all of our scouts signed up to participate in 2019) has been moved to the first day of December rather than the end of December as in year’s past.  Scouts need to make sure that their rechartering fees are paid no later than December 1st, 2018.

The troop will be unable to front the cost of rechartering for scouts who have not paid their rechartering fees in full by the deadline.  Scouts not paid in full will not be rechartered with the troop, but can be added back to the troop’s active roster at a later time once the fees are paid.

Troop 108 Attending Summer Camp At “Ho Non Wah” next summer

Several weeks ago the scouts voted to attend summer camp at Camp Ho Non Wah on Wadmallow Island just southeast of Charleston, SC.  The troop has attended summer camp there a few times before and it is an impressive camp with the perfect blend of great facilities, great food, great staff and great program.

We will be attending camp June 23rd through June 29th 2019 and the total cost (excluding merit badge specific costs) will be $325.  This will include a summer camp t-shirt, travel costs, and money for bottled water.

You may start paying portions of the total now by either sending payment via your scouts to the troop treasurer at our troop meetings, or by using the “Click Here To Pay” option in the right hand column of this website. Note that Paypal does charge a small fee for each transaction.  Note that the troop does pass along bank fees incurred when NSF issues are encountered related to payment by personal check.

Graham W To Conduct Eagle Service Project On October 13 – Help Needed

Graham W. will be working on his Eagle Scout service project on Saturday, October 13 at Fort Mill Elementary School (192 Springfield Pkwy, Fort Mill, SC 29715) from 9am to 4pm.

Lunch will be provided and scouts are strongly encouraged to bring gloves, safety glasses, and water. If they can also bring rakes, shovels, and a wheelbarrow that would be great as we will be moving a large amount of dirt for this project.

Scouts needing service hours can use this opportunity to help meet that requirement.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Emergency Preparedness – Putting Training Into Action

As Scouts we are taught to “Be Prepared” for all situations.  That is easier said than done in most cases.  You may have already heard about Hurricane Florence, still hundreds of miles out into the Atlantic Ocean, that seems to want to come visit the Carolinas towards the end of the week.  Because of great technology we are given a “window of opportunity” to make sure that our families are prepared to weather such a storm, if it should happen to make it this far inland.

Some people scoff at the thought of a hurricane affecting us in the Charlotte area very much, but anyone who survived Hugo in the late 80’s know that it IS possible.  Following Hugo, Assistant Scoutmaster Helms’ home was without power for 23 days and others have similar stories.

As a scout, how can you help your family be better prepared?  The best case scenario is one where you are completely prepared and the hurricane veers off on a path that doesn’t impact land.

Here is some information that you might find useful:
