Summer Camp Update & Packing List

Can you believe that our week at Camp Ho Non Wah is just a few weeks away?

Below is a link to a sample list of things that your scout might want to pack for a fun-filled week at camp.

We’ll cover other things and answer specific questions about summer camp at the parent’s meeting prior to the Summer Court of Honor that is coming up soon.

Please note that we have scouts with outstanding balances for summer camp that need to be paid as soon as possible.

Summer Camp Packing List

Meeting/Swim Test on 04/22/19 @ The Complex Pool – $5 fee

The Aquatics Activity (swim test for summer camp) planned for May has been rescheduled and combined with the Troop Meeting on Monday, April 22, which will be held at The Complex.

Scouts should arrive dressed to “jump right in” and bring a towel and wear the red troop t-shirt and shoes which they can put back on once they’re out of the water. Goggles may also be worn, if desired.

We will be at the complex from 7pm to 8pm. Parents should pick up their scouts no later than 8pm.

Please also note that the Unity Youth Wing will be closed to Scouting the week of April 22 to host Family Promise.

Troop 108 Attending Summer Camp At “Ho Non Wah” next summer

Several weeks ago the scouts voted to attend summer camp at Camp Ho Non Wah on Wadmallow Island just southeast of Charleston, SC.  The troop has attended summer camp there a few times before and it is an impressive camp with the perfect blend of great facilities, great food, great staff and great program.

We will be attending camp June 23rd through June 29th 2019 and the total cost (excluding merit badge specific costs) will be $325.  This will include a summer camp t-shirt, travel costs, and money for bottled water.

You may start paying portions of the total now by either sending payment via your scouts to the troop treasurer at our troop meetings, or by using the “Click Here To Pay” option in the right hand column of this website. Note that Paypal does charge a small fee for each transaction.  Note that the troop does pass along bank fees incurred when NSF issues are encountered related to payment by personal check.

In Case You Had Somehow Missed The Change In Summer Camp Locations….

Here is a link to a packing list from a couple of years back.  Nothing has really changed, so use it as a guide to help you to pack the things that you need, and leave at home the things that you don’t need to bring.

Disregard the mention of the $10 transportation fee at the end of the list.

Reminder: Swim Tests Tonight – No Regular Meeting

Instead of a regular Monday night meeting, we’re holding pre-camp swim tests.

Why: This will make our check into camp so much easier and faster when we arrive.

Where: Anne Springs Close Greenway Complex

When: From 7pm to 8pm on June 4th

How should I arrive: Bring your $5.00 & Come ready to swim.  Bring your towel and goggles if you use them.

This is a great opportunity to turn in your updated BSA Health Form (Parts A, B & C must be completed) and a copy of the scout’s insurance card should be attached.

What does the test involve?  Similar but different things depending upon your skill level as shown below:

SWIMMER’S TEST:

  • Jump feet-first into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin swimming.
  • Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl;
  • then swim 25 yards using an easy resting backstroke.
  • he 100 yards must be swum continuously and include at least one sharp turn.
  • After completing the swim, rest by floating.

BEGINNER’S TEST:

  • Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off,
  • swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply,
  • resume swimming as before, and return to starting place.

Summer Camp T-Shirts Are Ready To Order – Deadline June 4th.

Troop 108 has made our own camp t-shirt for each the past few summers that feature something about the camp that we are attending on the back.  Our intent was to celebrate our return to Bob Hardin after a three-year absence this year with a “Back To The Future” themed shirt.  As you all know by now, Bob Hardin has cancelled their summer camping season due to a flash flood that swept through camp this past weekend. In honor of our intended return to Bob Hardin and in commemoration of the flash flood event that altered the plans of so many, we’ve altered the original design a bit.  This design is still a “work in progress”

============================

These help make the troop look uniform at camp and help make the scouts easy to spot from a distance while at camp.  The troop leaders strongly suggest that each scout attending summer camp order a shirt.  These will be handed out to the scouts one morning during the week so that everyone will show up for breakfast in the same shirt. Your scout may have already been contacted at the troop meeting as to whether or not he wanted a T-shirt, but even if you have already indicated your size and how many you wanted to order, please use this form to confirm your selection and pay for the shirts.  We need to get this done ASAP as the summer camp is right around the corner. Cost for the shirts is $10 each up to and including size XL.  After XL, each additional larger size will be an additional $1.00.  Once you have selected your scout’s size and quantity you can use the payment button to pay for your shirt(s).  If you’d rather pay in cash, please have your scout bring it to the June 4th meeting.  T-shirts ordered but not payed for by the close of the meeting on June 4th will not be ordered. Scouts who are not attending our summer camp this year may also order a shirt using this form and can get their shirt at the first meeting following summer camp, July 9th.

Elective Activity For Summer Camp Available For Registration

Troop 108 is happy to team up with Green River Adventures for an elective troop kayaking adventure on Friday of our stay at Camp Bob Hardin this summer.  There is an extra cost of $32 per person for this exciting three-hour adventure down the Green River (located just over the mountain from Camp Bob Hardin).

Scout’s parents or guardians must complete and sign the GRA Participant Agreement located HERE and turn it in as soon as possible.  Scouts can sign up and pay through the link in TroopMaster in the right-hand column of this page.

The only requirements to participate in this elective activity are:

  • Must wear closed-toed shoes (no sandals, no crocks)
  • Must have registered and paid through Troopmaster ASAP
  • Must have turned in a completed and signed GRA Participant Agreement

There will be activities at camp for scouts who choose not to participate in this elective activity with the troop.

Summer Camp Payments & Merit Badge Selections Needed

Just a reminder that summer camp at Camp Bob Hardin is right around the corner. Scouts were supposed to have their first $100 deposit in by March 1st. If your Scout doesn’t yet have his deposit in, be sure to get it in as soon as possible.  The second $100 installment is due on April 1, and that’s no April fool!

Scouts also need to print out the merit badge schedule located HERE and write their name at the top of the page and circle their program selections and the day they would like to take each of the badges.  Some scouts may have already made their selections at last week’s troop meeting or took the page home to discuss with their parents.  Check with your scout to see if they have completed this already, and if not print this out and have them follow the directions above and return it no later than the March 12 troop meeting.

You may also click HERE to view the 2018 Camp Bob Harden Leader’s Guide, or visit the camp of pardon web page located HERE.

The troop will also be planning a tubing event down the Green River (just on the other side of the mountain from Camp Bob Hardin) on Friday of summer camp week.  This is always a fun adventure for our scouts and leaders.  There may be an additional cost for this excursion, and we will pass this information on as it becomes available.

Also not included in the $300 camp fee pricing is the cost of a Troop 108 Summer Camp T-Shirt (optional) which is usually around $10, $5 to help purchase cases of water to help keep our scouts hydrated during the week and $5 to help our scout leaders with transportation costs associated with transporting scouts and equipment to and from camp.
