A Scout who is unable to complete one or more requirements can schedule later sessions with the counselor to demonstrate his knowledge or skills or requirement completions.
Preparation before class:
1. Scouts can print merit badge requirements from
a. http://www.scouting.org/meritbadges.aspx
or from
b. http://www.meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Merit_Badge_Worksheets
Printed workbooks are optional and not mandatory but Scouts will find that workbooks from the www.meritbadge.org site will be helpful in organizing their work.
2. Scouts should bring these pages and blank paper and pen to the course for their notes and research. These items will not be supplied by the course instructors.
Preparation during class: All Scouts are expected to take notes and to write down answers to requirement questions as the information is presented during the course. These notes should be available at the end of the day to show the merit badge counselor on-site and to demonstrate your participation and learning to your Scoutmaster and other troop leaders. Scouts should keep these notes to avoid any concerns about the level of participation or accomplishment at Boards of Review or Scoutmaster Conferences.
**Mining in Society Merit Badge pre-workshop homework:**
1. Scouts should research and complete section 1(a)(b)(c) prior to arrival on site and Be Prepared to discuss with the group what they learned from this process.
a. Have answers written either in the workbook or organized on a separate sheet of paper.
2. Scouts should research 1 (one) career for section 8(b) and Be Prepared to present the selected career and related information to the group. Scouts will complete section 8(b) based on information they learn from other workshop participants during their presentations.
a. Have answers written either in the workbook or organized on a separate sheet of paper.

2018 Camp Bud Schiele Class Schedule

Leaders and scouts of Troop 108 have the distinct privilege of providing a “good turn” for a member of our community on April 30th, 2018. The person that we’re assisting is a long-time supporter of Scouting and has a now grown Eagle Scout son.
Scouts will earn service hours and those working on Citizenship in the Community can gain some service hour time for their merit badge service requirement as well.
Here are the specifics:
- Our service project involves moving approximately 5 yards of dirt for a raised bed garden.
- Scouts should be dropped off and picked up at 110 Patterson Street, Ft Mill (see map below)
- Drop scouts off between 5 and 6pm.
- Pickup time between 8 to 8:30 (scouts will call if we complete our tasks early)
- Bring a BSA activity shirt (troop t-shirt or similar BSA related shirt)
- Bring gloves, shovel and wheel barrow if possible.
This is a great opportunity for us to get out in our community and make an impact outside of roadside litter pickup or Scouting for Food activities during the year.
For those that signed up for Merit Badge Courses next week at the Spring Camporee, please note that there are some prerequisites to a few of the Merit Badges that must be taken care of before the boys arrive in class.
These are below:

Citizenship in the Nation:
Prerequisites that the scouts need to complete ahead of time are:
#2. Do TWO of the following:
a. Visit a place that is listed as a National Historic Landmark or that is on the National Register of Historic Places. Tell your counselor what you learned about the landmark or site and what you found interesting about it.
b. Tour your state capitol building or the U.S. Capitol. Tell your counselor what you learned about the capitol, its function, and the history.
c. Tour a federal facility. Explain to your counselor what you saw there and what you learned about its function in the local community and how it serves this nation.
d. Choose a national monument that interests you. Using books, brochures, the Internet (with your parent’s permission), and other resources, find out more about the monument. Tell your counselor what you learned, and explain why the monument is important to this country’s citizens. (Note: Item D will be done in class.)
#3 Watch the NATIONAL EVENING NEWS five days in a row OR read the front page of a major daily NEWSPAPER five days in a row. Discuss the national issues you learned about with your counselor. Choose one of the NATIONAL issues and explain how it affects you and your family. (Note: This can be done with online national news site.)
Take a piece of note paper and write the following For each of the five days: # date, topic read for each day. Be prepared to discuss one article in class.
#8 Name your two senators and the member of Congress from your congressional district. Write a letter about a national issue and send it to one of these elected officials, sharing your view with him or her. Show your letter and any response you receive to your counselor.
Bring a copy of that letter to class for the counselor to review and sign off on.

Communication:
Prerequisites if scouts intend to complete the badge the same day are 5 and 8.

Soon we will have the opportunity to sign our scouts up for merit bade classes at Camp Rainey Mountain for 2017. The faster our leaders can be when the class signups open to get our scouts registered the more likely our scouts are to get the classes that they want.
What do we need to make this happen? We need for our scouts to look over this listing of the merit badges being offered and select the ones that they would like to take. Then write down your selections and bring them to an upcoming troop meeting BEFORE MARCH 6th
OTHER IMPORTANT SUMMER CAMP DATES & INFO:
- Payment #2 of $100 is due no later than March 31st
- Swim Test – Date Yet-To-Be Determined – Probably at the Complex On The Greenway
- Health Forms – ALL health forms will be due no later than two weeks before we depart for camp. Summer requires all three parts A, B and C be completed. Part C must be filled out by a doctor.

Mrs. Ludolph will be leading the eagle-required Family Life Merit Badge beginning at 7pm on Monday, April 11th, 2016. This is for scouts who are First Class rank and above.
