Remember, No School, No Scouts

Just a reminder that any time our scouts are out of school on a Monday that we normally do not have a scout meeting that night.

Next week’s meeting (01-28-2019) is a Patrol Leader’s Council (PLC) and Board of Review night. Any scout is welcome to sit in on the PLC as they plan the upcoming month’s meetings and activities. These PLC meetings don’t usually last the normal full meeting length.

Keep in mind that we have a couple of important activities coming up that we’ll be posting additional information about:

—> Saturday, February 2nd – Scouting For Food Bag Dropoff. In the past this has been a fall event but we’re transitioning to a spring event to correspond with Scout Week and Scout Sunday.

—> Sunday, February 3rd – Scout Sunday @ Unity Presbyterian Church – Scouts are asked to attend in Full Uniform and arrive at 8:30am.

NO SCOUT MEETING tonight, April 3rd, 2017 Because of Severe Weather

Since Fort Mill School District has cancelled all after school activities because of the Tornado Watch that is in effect until 8:30pm Scoutmaster Ludolph has elected to play it safe with our scouts and their families as well.

There will be NO SCOUT MEETING tonight, April 3rd, 2017.

No Meeting on April 10th, 2017 as schools are out on Spring Break.

We will have our next regular meeting on Monday night, April 17th, 2017 which would normally be Patrol Leader’s Council meeting only, but given two weeks without a meeting we will have a regular troop meeting.

Stay home and stay safe.  This is a great opportunity to review Emergency Preparedness plans that your family has in place and to consider any changes that need to be made to the plan.

No School, No Scouts on February 20th, 2017

Remember the rule “No School, No Scouts” will prevent us from having a meeting tonight, February 20th.  We look forward to seeing each of you on February 27th for our regular meeting.

Upcoming Meeting Information

We’ll have both a regular meeting and a Patrol Leaders Council on July 25th @ 7pm.  We’ll use this time to plan upcoming meetings and to make sure that we’ve correctly documented work completed by our scouts while at Summer Camp.

Great Gear Give Away

On August 1st we will hold the “Great Gear Give Away” for boys who meet the following criteria:

  1. Current member of Troop 108
  2. Paid Up – No money owed to the troop
  3. Present at the time of the event

The troop has acquired a bunch of gear – some new and some used – that we simply don’t have room to store.  We’re going to issue tickets to those scouts who meet the criteria above and will hold a random drawing to determine who will win what item.  We have sleeping bags, backpacks with frames and so much more.  Once a scout wins an item, he is free to do with it as he wishes (trade, sell, give away) as long as it leaves the premises at the end of the night.  More Info to follow.

Troop 108 Order of the Arrow Elections To Be Held May 8th

An election  team from Skyuka Lodge, 270, Order of the Arrow will be at our May 8th meeting to conduct an election for our eligible youth members.  The Order of the Arrow (OA) is Scouting’s National Honor Society. The fourfold purpose of the OA is:

  • To recognize those campers – Scouts and Scouters – who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives, and by such recognition cause other campers to conduct themselves in such manner as to warrant recognition.
  • To develop and maintain camping traditions and spirit.
  • To promote Scout camping, which reaches its greatest effectiveness as a part of the unit’s camping program, both year-round and in the summer camp, as directed by the camping committee of the council.
  • To crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others.

In order to hold an election we must have at least 50% of our registered members present.  You may vote for all of the eligible boys, some of the elegible boys or none of the eligible boys – depending upon who you think is most deserving.  To be elected, boys must receive 1 vote more than 50% of the total boys in attendance.

The Order of the Arrow membership requirements are:

  • Be a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America.
  • After registration with a troop or team, have experienced 15 days and nights of Boy Scout camping during the two-year period prior to the election. The 15 days and nights must include one, but no more than one, long-term camp consisting of six consecutive days and five nights of resident camping, approved and under the auspices and standards of the Boy Scouts of America. The balance of the camping must be overnight, weekend, or other short-term camps.
  • Youth must be under the age of 21, hold the BSA First Class rank or higher, and following approval by the Scoutmaster or Varsity team Coach, be elected by the youth members of their troop or team.
  • Adults (age 21 or older) who are registered in the BSA and meet the camping requirements may be selected following nomination to the lodge adult selection committee. Adult selection is based on their ability to perform the necessary functions to help the Order fulfill its purpose, and is not for recognition of service, including current or prior positions. Selected adults must be an asset to the Order because of demonstrated abilities, and must provide a positive example for the growth and development of the youth members of the lodge.
