Troop 108 Attending Summer Camp At “Ho Non Wah” next summer

Several weeks ago the scouts voted to attend summer camp at Camp Ho Non Wah on Wadmallow Island just southeast of Charleston, SC.  The troop has attended summer camp there a few times before and it is an impressive camp with the perfect blend of great facilities, great food, great staff and great program.

We will be attending camp June 23rd through June 29th 2019 and the total cost (excluding merit badge specific costs) will be $325.  This will include a summer camp t-shirt, travel costs, and money for bottled water.

You may start paying portions of the total now by either sending payment via your scouts to the troop treasurer at our troop meetings, or by using the “Click Here To Pay” option in the right hand column of this website. Note that Paypal does charge a small fee for each transaction.  Note that the troop does pass along bank fees incurred when NSF issues are encountered related to payment by personal check.

Medical Forms & Medications Requirements For Summer Camp

Medications For Camp

BSA - Pill Bottles

We will have a special table set up at our departure point on Sunday, July 10th to handle the turn in of medications that will be needed by our scouts during our week at camp.  We ask that parents abide by the following guidelines when preparing their scout’s medications for camp:

  • Place all medications in a zip-lock type plastic bag with the scout’s name on it.
  • Keep the medications in the original prescription bottle/container
  • Include a filled out copy of the BSA’s Routine Drug Administration Record (click here for a copy)

The BSA’s Guide to Safe Scouting has the following regarding medications while on trips:

BSA Medical Forms

BSA - Medical Forms

Scouts and scouters without a complete BSA Annual Health and Medical Record (Parts A, B and C) will not be allowed to participate in summer camp activities with the Troop.  Scouts that show up at departure without a complete and approved medical form (or don’t have a current completed form on file with the troop) will be denied travel with the troop to attend camp.  Parents may take the scout to get a physical completed and documented on the BSA form (available for download below) and may then bring the scout and completed form to camp to complete the duration of the week.  This is BSA policy and the troop cannot make changes to it.  The BSA Annual Health and Medical Record can be downloaded HERE.

Get Your Updated BSA Health Form Turned In For Summer Camp

BSA - Health Forms

Choosing your merit badge classes and completing payment are certainly an important part of preparing for summer camp, but another part, when overlooked, could mess up your plans to attend.    The BSA Health Form (2014 edition) has three parts – all of which must be completed within a year to attend summer camp.  Part C specifically has to be completed by medical personnel.

Use THIS LINK to get a PDF copy of the most recent edition of the health form and get it completed and turned in to Mr. Starnes at an upcoming meeting.

Welcome New Webelos!

fluer-welcome-matNew Webelos scouts and their families, we welcome you to the Troop 108 family and look forward to helping your scout to grow and advance in scouting and in life.

Here are a few things that will help your scout transition into the troop:

Dues:  Each member of the troop pays their annual re-charter fee in December of each year.   As new members of the troop, your fee amount has been reduced to $40.00 and can either be paid in cash at a troop meeting or my using the payment button below (which actually charges $1.50 extra to cover transaction fees).

New Webelos Registration Payment of $41.50 click the button below

Medical Forms:  The troop needs a copy of your scout’s medical form (at least Parts A & B until summer camp) before they can participate in activities other than troop meetings.

Upcoming Campout: Registration for the camp out has been extended through Wednesday evening, March 11th, 2015.  You can register online using the registration form in an earlier post.

Summer Camp: See the earlier post regarding our troop’s summer camp plans and payment buttons.  It will be a lot of fun and our newest members will be able to participate in a program that will really help move them along the path towards First Class rank and earn a couple of other merit badges as well.

Subscribe to our Website:  By subscribing you’ll get an email each time we update the site – making sure that you and your scout don’t miss any new information.  Subscribing and then maintaining your subscription is easily done through the link in the right hand column of the webpage under “Get Notified”

BSA Has Revised Their Health Form

Boy Scouts of America has made some changes to the BSA Health Form that we have to have completed by a doctor each year.

The “All Scouting Events” download at the link below gets you Parts A and B.  The  “Are you going to Camp?” download gets you Parts A, B, and C (which is required for those attending scouting events over 72 hours in length).

There is additional info for the high adventure camp requirements.

BSA Medical Form Reminder / Update

All Scouts attending Summer Camp must have BSA Medical Forms parts A,B and C (Doctor signed camp physical). The Troop also recommends that all forms be completed at the same time (Date) to help ensure our records are accurate.

Medical forms can be obtained at http://www.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/part_c.pdf .

We will be on site at the swim test Monday at the Baxter YMCA to collect completed forms and we will be at the Scout House on Wednesday from 6:00 – 7:00 if required.

We do not have the ability to collect and process medical forms on the day we leave for camp so all forms must be turned in by Wednesday June 26th.

Camp Bud Schiele – Right Around The Corner

Important information can be found in this letter emailed to the parents of scouts going to camp: 06-23-2012 Parent Letter – Camp Bud Schiele

We are just a week away from leaving for a week of fun and adventure at Camp Bud Schiele in Rutherfordton, NC. Classes have been chosen, payments have been made and camp physicals have been completed – yes, most of the hard work is behind us. Note that Monday night, June 25th during the regular troop meeting is the last opportunity for parents to make sure that they are paid in full and that we have their scout(s) physical form. We will NOT be accepting paperwork or payments when we gather to depart for camp.

Parents of scouts that have been to camp before have a pretty good handle on how we make things happen as we are departing for and returning from camp, but we’ll list a few items here for everyone’s benefit.

The first rule to going to camp (and even our monthly campouts) should be to MARK EVERYTHING with your scout’s name and/or initals.

Scouts should pack their gear in a footlocker. These come in various shapes, sizes and colors. Everything except the scout’s daypack should fit in this footlocker (including their sleeping bag). If it isn’t difficult to get closed, then you can bet that you’ve probably forgotten something. I’ve seen these for sale at Lowes, Home Depot, Big Lots, Walmart and Sports Authority.

Each scout is asked to take time to prepare a day pack which will be his constant companion during his time at camp. This pack should have just about anything that he might need at a moment’s notice while in camp. We’ve put together a Day Pack Contents Listing, in PDF format, which you can click on print out. Scouts are invited to bring their prepared day packs to the June 25th meeting for a courtesy check if they wish.

Other things to keep in mind…

  • Scouts may bring smart phones (with the parent’s permission) for use as a digital camera. The adult leaders will not tolerate smart phones being used as music players and gaming devices. The adult leaders prefer that the scouts bring an inexpensive digital camera or a disposable 35mm camera.
  • Scouts are encouraged to divide up their money for the week and to “hide” it in several different places in their gear. That way if they lose the money that they have with them, they haven’t lost it all.
  • Scouts are told not to ask adult leaders to loan them money. Any scout loaning money to another scout should consider their “loan” to be a gift to the other scout and not expect to be paid back. Adult leaders will not referee disputes over loaned money.
  • All clothing must be scout appropriate. T-shirts don’t have to be scouting specific, but cannot be of a questionable nature. If a scout is wearing something that is considered inappropriate, he will be asked to change clothes.
  • Scouts are encouraged to bring camp chairs to sit in while in the campsite.

;

Departure for Camp:

We will gather in the Bi-Lo parking lot in the end closest the intersection of Hwy 160 and Munn Road beginning at around 9AM on July 1st, 2012. Scouts should bring 1 case (24 bottles) of water to contribute to the troop supply for the week. We typically load the scout’s gear in the troop trailer and then assign the scouts a vehicle to ride in to camp. We always get a group picture just before departure.

;

Returning From Camp:

We expect to arrive back at the Bi-Lo parking lot from summer camp around mid-day on Saturday, July 7th, 2012. Typically the scouts will call parents when we are about 30 minutes away from arriving to make sure that the parents are waiting for them when we arrive. Our adult leaders will have spent seven glorious days with your scouts by this time, so please do them the courtesy of being on time to pick up your scout.

If you have questions about anything not covered here, you may contact the Scoutmaster or Troop Committee Chairman by clicking HERE and selecting them from the drop-down list of available recipients.

Summer Camp Medical Forms are due by June 25th.

Summer Camp Medical Forms are due by Monday’s Meeting on June 25th.

  • We must have parts A, B & C completed and there must be a date on the Tetanus Shot. The camp will not accept “Current” or “Current for School” in the Tetanus area due to BSA National requirements. (A link to the form, in PDF format, is located below)
  • Please also make sure that we have a current copy of your insurance card.
  • We will not be able to collect any Medical Forms on the day we depart for Camp. We have to make extra copies and bind all materials and we will not be able to do this on-site.
  • If you have any questions, please contact Steve Finch, Troop Committee Chairman, by going HERE and selecting “Troop Committee Chairman” as the recipient of your message.
