Unity Presbyterian Fire & Relocation of Next Week’s Court of Honor

Five-alarm fire engulfs Unity Hall just before the roof collapses on 12-09-2018

Many of you are probably already aware that a 5-alarm fire swept through the Unity Hall building on the campus of Unity Presbyterian Church late on Sunday evening.  Through the collective efforts of many, many departments and volunteers over several hours, the historic sanctuary, new sanctuary and family life building were spared major fire damage.

We are blessed that almost all of the troop’s equipment was safely stored away in the troop trailer outside.  Much of what the troop lost was of historical value only and couldn’t be replaced. We are unsure what this means for a meeting place for the troop at this time, but rest assured that plans are being made to figure this out.

In the mean time, our Court of Honor was already postponed from tonight until next Monday night, the 17th, at the church’s request because of concerns related to the anticipated bad weather from this weekend.

The Court of Honor will continue as planned on the 17th.  St. John’s United Methodist Church, directly across the screen from the Fire Department on Tom Hall Street, has graciously opened their facility to us to use for our event.  We will start on the 17th with a parent’s meeting at 6:30pm, which will be followed by the Court of Honor and we will conclude with a time of fellowship and snacks.

Many thanks to St. Johns UMC and to Tevis Vandergriff, York District Trainer and Chartered Organization Representative for Troop 130, which is chartered to St. Johns, for making this possible.

Hurricane Irma Concerns Cancel Beach Sweep Weekend

Due to weather concerns, the York District Activities Team as decided to postpone the planned Beach Sweep Event for this coming weekend.  It may be planned for another weekend at a later time.

With 35 consecutive years of service to the beach community (along with lots of fun) they hated to not continue this year, but the main concern is for the safety of our scouting families.

This also keeps us out of the way of those who call the coastal areas home as they prepare their properties to weather the impending storm.

We will decided late in the weekend, depending upon weather conditions, whether we will be having a troop meeting on Monday night.

NO SCOUT MEETING tonight, April 3rd, 2017 Because of Severe Weather

Since Fort Mill School District has cancelled all after school activities because of the Tornado Watch that is in effect until 8:30pm Scoutmaster Ludolph has elected to play it safe with our scouts and their families as well.

There will be NO SCOUT MEETING tonight, April 3rd, 2017.

No Meeting on April 10th, 2017 as schools are out on Spring Break.

We will have our next regular meeting on Monday night, April 17th, 2017 which would normally be Patrol Leader’s Council meeting only, but given two weeks without a meeting we will have a regular troop meeting.

Stay home and stay safe.  This is a great opportunity to review Emergency Preparedness plans that your family has in place and to consider any changes that need to be made to the plan.

Scouts – Make Your Summer Camp Class Choices Now!

Soon we will have the opportunity to sign our scouts up for merit bade classes at Camp Rainey Mountain for 2017.  The faster our leaders can be when the class signups open to get our scouts registered the more likely our scouts are to get the classes that they want.

What do we need to make this happen?  We need for our scouts to look over this listing of the merit badges being offered and select the ones that they would like to take.  Then write down your selections and bring them to an upcoming troop meeting BEFORE MARCH 6th

OTHER IMPORTANT SUMMER CAMP DATES & INFO:

  • Payment #2 of $100 is due no later than March 31st
  • Swim Test – Date Yet-To-Be Determined – Probably at the Complex On The Greenway
  • Health Forms – ALL health forms will be due no later than two weeks before we depart for camp.  Summer requires all three parts A, B and C be completed.  Part C must be filled out by a doctor.

Summer Camp – Departure, Arrival and Other Very Important Information

Departure & Arrival

Scouts should arrive at the Bi-Lo parking lot (Hwy 160 W @ Munn Road in Fort Mill) on Sunday on July 10th no later than 11am. They should be in full uniform (we always travel in full uniform) and bring $5 for bottled water to be purchased while at camp and $10 to help cover the cost of transportation ($15 total). They should bring their medications to the med station that will be set up and also be prepared to provide the combination/or extra keys to their footlocker’s lock.

We will plan to stop and grab a quick bite on the way to AND from camp, so be sure to save extra money for that.
Scouts will return to the same location for pick-up on Saturday, July 16th around 1pm to 2pm and will have your scouts call when we are about 30 minutes away.

Visitors

Families and friends are encouraged to attend the special family night campfire held  Thursday evening. Units begin to prepare for the campfire at 7:00 pm.  Those planning to attend should arrive in camp prior to that time but not before 4:30pm.

If visiting, please observe the camp speed limit.. NO MEALS WILL BE OFFERED TO VISITORS, so please be sure to eat before you arrive at camp or you may bring a meal to enjoy with your scout.

Emergency Contact

The emergency phone number for the cam camp is (843) 559‐9302.

Keeping Up With The Fun At Summer Camp

We will be posting pictures galore on the Troop 108 FaceBook page all week long.  This will help parents see the fun and and excitement that their scout is having at summer camp.

Cell Phones & Home Sickness

Normally scouts would not have access to a phone during camp, but because our cell phones today are like a multi-tool which includes a camera, we are going to allow scouts to keep their phones while at camp – as long as they do not become a problem.

Cell phones give a homesick scout (or leader) easy access to call home to try to arrange an early departure from camp.  We encourage parents (and spouses of leaders) not to give in to pleas to be able to end their summer camp adventure early.

Lending Money

Scouts should know that the rule in Troop 108 is that if you lend someone money that you have actually given them money with no expectation of being paid back.  Leaders will not act as referee between scouts who have borrowed/loaned money.

What to Pack

Be sure to see our “what to pack” list which can be found by clicking this link  —>  Packing List for Summer Camp
There may be other things not found on the list that your scout may want/need to bring as well.

Troop 108 Member In Need Of Our Support

BSA - McMinnOne of our own members is in need of positive thoughts and prayers as he battles to get back to good health following complications from a planned surgical procedure over the Christmas break.

Read more about his story and contribute if you wish by clicking here.

Once he is back home we’ll try to organize our scouting family to assist with some meals for the family.

Sweatshirts – Hooded & Crew Neck Available For Order

The troop is about to place an order for both Hooded and Crew Neck sweatshirts.  Hooded sweatshirts are $16 each and crew neck sweatshirts are $11 each. The due date for your order and money to be turned in is at the December 14th troop Court of Honor.

It Is Annual Recharter Time For Our Troop – Each Scout’s Fee is $50

It is time for the members of Troop 108 to recharter for the upcoming year.  The annual cost of rechartering for our scouts is $50 and can be paid online using the link below (paypal fee will be added) or in person at upcoming meetings.  The total fee of $50 per scout must be paid by the troop’s Court of Honor on December14th, 2015

The troop will no longer front the fee to recharter scouts, so scouts who have not paid their recharter fee by the end of the Court of Honor will not be signed up as a member of the troop for 2016.
