OA Members – Your Help Needed For Shooting Sports At Cub Scout Day Camp

The council shooting sports committee is asking for the help of OA members with the York Dist Cub Scout Day camp. Helpers are needed for the Archery and BB gun ranges.

16 scouts are needed to assist on the ranges. The dates are June 17-20 with range “set up” on Saturday, June 15 at Bethelwoods Camp.

For any that can help one or more days, contact me at this email jhill@comporium.net or call 803 372 7284. Remember per Youth Protection, have your parent contact me on your behalf.

We really need your support to make the shooting sports part of day camp a safe and exciting experience.

Also, if any have canopies or pop-ups that can be used to cover the ranges, let me know.

Shrine Bowl Drop-off/Pick-up Site Changed

Because of the recent events at Unity Presbyterian Church we are changing the drop-off/pick-up site for the Shrine Bowl to the US Post Office parking lot directly across the street.

Those attending should still arrive by 7am and bring money to purchase breakfast at the Peach Blossom on the way to the game and supper at the Beacon after the game.  Lunch will be provided by the Shriners in appreciation of our help.  We are typically back in Fort Mill around 7pm and the scouts will call when we are about 30 minutes away.

The current forecast includes a chance of rain with temps in the mid to high 30’s to start the day and getting up the low to mid 50’s by mid-day, so dress accordingly.

Angel Tree Opportunity

The past few years Troop 108 has sponsored a bicycle and helmet for a young boy or girl from the Unity Presbyterian Church Angel Tree.  This year we have again enthusiastically agreed to sponsor a bike and helmet for a deserving child.

If you would like to participate, please bring any donation to the next couple of meetings and see ASM Carter or Mr. Weller, our troop treasurer, to accept your kind donation.  We will be able take donations through the end of the troop’s winter Court of Honor event on December 10th.

Emergency Preparedness – Putting Training Into Action

As Scouts we are taught to “Be Prepared” for all situations.  That is easier said than done in most cases.  You may have already heard about Hurricane Florence, still hundreds of miles out into the Atlantic Ocean, that seems to want to come visit the Carolinas towards the end of the week.  Because of great technology we are given a “window of opportunity” to make sure that our families are prepared to weather such a storm, if it should happen to make it this far inland.

Some people scoff at the thought of a hurricane affecting us in the Charlotte area very much, but anyone who survived Hugo in the late 80’s know that it IS possible.  Following Hugo, Assistant Scoutmaster Helms’ home was without power for 23 days and others have similar stories.

As a scout, how can you help your family be better prepared?  The best case scenario is one where you are completely prepared and the hurricane veers off on a path that doesn’t impact land.

Here is some information that you might find useful:

Troop 108 Member In Need Of Our Support

BSA - McMinnOne of our own members is in need of positive thoughts and prayers as he battles to get back to good health following complications from a planned surgical procedure over the Christmas break.

Read more about his story and contribute if you wish by clicking here.

Once he is back home we’ll try to organize our scouting family to assist with some meals for the family.

Troop Collecting Toys For Jayden Hayes “Toys for Smiles” Project

JaydenHayes_SmileScouts are also asked to bring one or more small toys (like the ones you would get in a happy meal or could easily hold in one hand) to share with Jayden Hayes of Savannah Georgia who recently lost both of his parents and as part of dealing with his loss is now on a mission to share toys with people to make them smile.

We contacted his aunt and she was delighted to have the members of Troop 108 collect toys for Jayden to give away.  His goal is 33,000 toys exchanged for smiles.

Please start collecting and bringing in your toys to upcoming scout meetings to be delivered to Jayden so he can reach his goal.

See more about Jayden in the video below.

Harlan’s Heroes Trail Marking Event

BSA - HH LogoWe have an opportunity to assist a local charity that was created in memory of a young boy who fought and ultimately lost his battle with cancer.  Now this charity raises money to support their efforts to make the lives of local children fighting cancer (and their families) a little more enjoyable.  Visit Harlan’s Heroes website to learn more about this worthy charity.

Our opportunity to support and assist this charity comes this Saturday morning, September 26th, when Harlan’s Heroes and CureSearch team up along with Baxter Trails to tell children’s cancer to take a hike, and they have asked us to help mark the trails for this great cause from 7 AM to 8 AM.  We’ll meet where the trail starts….at the town hall on Richard’s Crossing in Baxter (click here for the event map). We need to start at 7 AM to mark the trails before the hike begins at 8 AM. We need as many scouts as possible to help with this fantastic event (many hands make light work).  Sign up below and wear your red troop t-shirt on Saturday morning.  Drop off and pick up at the Baxter Village Hall (3400 Richard’s Crossing, Fort Mill, SC 29708)

Shrine Bowl Service Opportunity

Shrine Bowl Patch

The troop always sends a contingent of scouts down to Spartanburg to assist with selling programs, and concessions for the Shrine Bowl each December.  All proceeds go to the Shriner Children’s Hospitals and our scouts not only have a great time, but earn service hours as well.

Scouts should bring money $5 for gas money as well as some money to eat both breakfast on the way down and to dine at the famous Beacon for supper before returning home at the end of the day.

Scouting For Food Bag Distribution on November 1st ~ Bag Pickup on November 8th

scouting for food

Scouts, we have a great opportunity for service in our community on two upcoming weekends.  On November 1st scouts will gather at the Scout Hut at 8:30am and move as a group throughout Whiteville Park (the neighborhood behind the scout hut) distributing bags for neighbors to fill up.  We’ll then canvas the neighborhood on November 8th at 9am collecting the filled bags to take to the Fort Mill Care Center.

Scouts will earn service hours for their ranks, they will have fun, but most importantly, they will make an impact on the lives of those in our community who so badly need the help and support of those that are willing to help.  Come make a difference!
