01 May 2012 Troop 108 Order of the Arrow Elections To Be Held May 8th
 |  Category: Order of the Arrow, Troop Meeting  | Comments off

An election  team from Skyuka Lodge, 270, Order of the Arrow will be at our May 8th meeting to conduct an election for our eligible youth members.  The Order of the Arrow (OA) is Scouting’s National Honor Society. The fourfold purpose of the OA is:

  • To recognize those campers – Scouts and Scouters – who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives, and by such recognition cause other campers to conduct themselves in such manner as to warrant recognition.
  • To develop and maintain camping traditions and spirit.
  • To promote Scout camping, which reaches its greatest effectiveness as a part of the unit’s camping program, both year-round and in the summer camp, as directed by the camping committee of the council.
  • To crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others.

In order to hold an election we must have at least 50% of our registered members present.  You may vote for all of the eligible boys, some of the elegible boys or none of the eligible boys – depending upon who you think is most deserving.  To be elected, boys must receive 1 vote more than 50% of the total boys in attendance.

The Order of the Arrow membership requirements are:

  • Be a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America.
  • After registration with a troop or team, have experienced 15 days and nights of Boy Scout camping during the two-year period prior to the election. The 15 days and nights must include one, but no more than one, long-term camp consisting of six consecutive days and five nights of resident camping, approved and under the auspices and standards of the Boy Scouts of America. The balance of the camping must be overnight, weekend, or other short-term camps.
  • Youth must be under the age of 21, hold the BSA First Class rank or higher, and following approval by the Scoutmaster or Varsity team Coach, be elected by the youth members of their troop or team.
  • Adults (age 21 or older) who are registered in the BSA and meet the camping requirements may be selected following nomination to the lodge adult selection committee. Adult selection is based on their ability to perform the necessary functions to help the Order fulfill its purpose, and is not for recognition of service, including current or prior positions. Selected adults must be an asset to the Order because of demonstrated abilities, and must provide a positive example for the growth and development of the youth members of the lodge.

 |  Category: Order of the Arrow  | Comments off

If you’re planning to attend the Skyuka Lodge Games fellowship this coming weekend, make sure that you get registered ASAP as the registration link on the lodge website will be coming down on Thursday morning.  If you don’t register, you can’t attend.

Once you’re registered, meet at the Bi-Lo parking lot prepared to leave at 4:30pm on Friday afternoon.  Don’t forget to bring you something to cook on the grill after we arrive (unless you elected to have the lodge provide a steak for you for an additional $7).  We will have the OA Health Form notebook with us (on the seat of the gator being pulled behind Mr. Harllee’s truck) so you don’t have to worry about bringing a physical form.

See you there!
